Coolie No.1 - Theatres and Amazon Prime

Rating: 3/5 - This is a rather generous rating.

Remake is the easy way out. Copy from the South. Copy from an earlier film and so on. In a way, making a remake is even more difficult than making an original film. With an original, you cannot be sure whether the film will work or not. A remake was a success, and everyone expects it to succeed again. But usually a formula which worked earlier, fails. This remake just gets pass marks.

David Dhawan starts of very well.  He gets the grammar and the idiom right. The first half is hilarious...with lot of new jokes and new punches. Of course, mimicry seems to be main stay of the film. Almost every one is doing some mimicry. If you enjoy mimicry ...as I do... you will enjoy the film....and in some places tolerate it. If you hate mimicry, then you will probably hate the entire film.

While the first half is enjoyable, in the second half David Dhawan loses the plot. I did not expect David Dhawan or Varun Dhawan to pull off this film. But the first part is so good, that you will probably stay. The appetizer was so good, you stay for the main course. But the main course disappoints. The desserts are totally avoidable.

Javed Jafri, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever sleep walk through the film. Only Varun's and David Dhawan's energy keeps the film from sagging! Rajpal Yadav repeats himself for the umpteenth time and is utterly wasted.  Bharati Achrekar is AWESOME. Really proud of our Marathi kalakaars.

#CoolieNo1 many Govinda fans think Varun failed miserably at "imitating" Govinda. I actually liked Varun's new interpretation. I think he pulled it off brilliantly. I don't think he was imitating Govinda....nor caricaturing him!

Brave of the film makers to release the film on Amazon Prime and also in the theatres. Hope this model works. Some over the top sequences can be enjoyed better on a large screen and not on the TV screen or computer monitor!  One really grand one is attempted, but almost falls flat on the face -- but David ji, thank you for attempting. The kid rescue scene.

Bollywood is known for unbelievable actions by the heroes. We have gulped them down for decades, keeping our brains aside. David Dhawan pays a compliment to this phenomenon and fails miserably. I actually liked the kid rescue scene. Very brave attempt! 99.99 will hate it! #CoolieNo1

Film making is a very difficult art. It is good to see David Dhawanji not losing his touch and making a film which will appeal to the masses.

This movie will certainly make Rs.100 crores, but not sure whether that is a good measure for the success of a film.

Watch the film for the hilarious first part. You can skip the second part or continue watching if it still holds interest.
